Weekly Project 3 - Modern Holiness
The purpose of the holiness laws in Leviticus 17-26 was to create separation from the nations—to form a nation that looked and acted differently from those nations around them. In this way the Israelites would be a Kingdom of Priests and a Holy Nation that would point the way to God. God still wants Christians to be different and unique so that we can fulfill our mission of being a light to the nations. So for this project, pick 3 of these laws in Leviticus 17-26 and “contemporize” them. In other words, outline what a modern version or adaptation of the law would look like for Christians. This adaptation should either address a social issue or just show that Christians are different in some way than the world around them for the purpose of pointing to God. For example, you might view the command not to wear clothes of mixed fibers (Lev 19:19) in light of the abuses that take place to provide us with clothes (child labor, slave labor, etc.). So, a Christian might decide only to wear homemade clothes, or second hand clothes, or clothes made by companies that have been vetted and are known to provide a fair wage. Each law that you “contemporize” should be discussed in light of its original context (what did it mean) and a clear modern application resulting in at least a full paragraph per law).
