COURSE DESCRIPTION & OVERVIEW

This course is an exploration of cultural diversity and multiculturalism from a Christian faith perspective. It is designed to initiate and provide ongoing preparation for effective interaction with everyone in our culturally diverse world.  

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to:

  • Develop an introductory awareness of cultural diversity issues.

  • Explore the prevailing views and debate on “color-blindness.”

  • Investigate lingering barriers in terms of cultural and gender issues.

  • Demonstrate culturally centered communication skills and conflict resolution.

  • Summarize the importance of cultural understanding within the church.


COURSE MINDSET

Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to:

  • Value a baseline for looking at cultural diversity issues especially for the believer.

  • Understand the implications of trying to be “color-blind” even though well-intended.

  • Recognize the various barriers that still exist when it comes to cultural and gender issues.

  • Appreciate culturally relevant communication and conflict resolution skills.

  • Understand how the Church must fulfill its mandate of extending the love of Jesus to all people.
